A world first for the aeronautics sector! Last June, the Liège-based company Safran Aero Boosters obtained certification from the European (EASA) and American (FAA) Aviation Safety Agencies for a civil reactor part produced using metallic 3D printing.
For those not yet aware of Safran Aero Boosters, this company, part of the international Safran group, designs, develops and manufactures low-pressure compressors, equipment and test benches for space and aerospace propulsion. The company equips most of the civil aircraft in service, as well as the European launcher Ariane.
It is in this context that the company, which employs around 1,800 people, 1,600 of them in Belgium, develops and manufactures the low-pressure compressor, the front bearing supports and the oil equipment for the LEAP® engine.
The part in question is an oil pump and is made from aluminium powder. Traditionally manufactured in a foundry, it retains the same functionalities and interfaces when produced using additive manufacturing, allowing it to be qualified, i.e. be able to fly... Which it is doing right now on the Airbus A320neo!
